TALEENA takes out campus DJ comp

The Uni Bar was out of control last Friday as the hottest DJs on campus stepped up to entertain the crowd at the Where’s Wally Party, and to compete for a place in State Final of the National Campus DJ Competition. The competition was tight but TALEENA (Taleena Churchill) emerged victorious ahead of runner up, TimesxTwo (Chaise Gaile), and third placed Josh Rutherford.

Campus heats were held a few weeks ago with the top six entrants offered a 15 minute set at the Where’s Wally Party (Friday 29 April) to get the crowd on their feet and battle it out for top spot.

“The DJ Comp was so much fun. I had such a good time and the other DJs played mad sets as well. It was an awesome party with a great atmosphere,” says TALEENA.

“It was such a short set but I guess it was to show how quickly and how good we were at being able to transition and switch up songs while bringing in and holding a crowd as well as being original yet diverse. I love being able to do what I love best as well as making people dance, seeing them have a good time and just having a room full of good vibes.”

TALEENA will represent Griffith University Gold Coast at the State Final later this year. The winner of the State Final will receive a 30 minute guest mix on RAW FM and the chance to mix it up at the National Final in Perth at the end of September. The overall winner of the National DJ Campus Competition will receive a one hour feature show on RAW FM, a mentoring session with Dim Mak Records in Los Angeles and up to $5000 toward travel and accommodation. Growing up with music her entire life, TALEENA says the transition to DJing started when she received a DJ controller for her seventeenth birthday. “I just taught myself after school, weekends and pretty much put all my spare time into learning how to beat match and how to mix all different genres. I fell in love with music at that stage. [It] sounds silly I know but I haven’t looked back since. I also had help from some friends of mine who were DJs when I was learning and they were able to show me a few things which I will always be grateful for.” TALEENA says she doesn’t have to look far for inspiration. “Inspiration for me is definitely looking back on where I was and what I wanted to do and then looking at where I am now, what I have done, where I have played and how happy I am with what I am doing,” she says.

“But I can’t forget, all the DJs and producers I look up to. They are the biggest motivation for me such as MOKSI, Tchami, Malaa, AC Slater and all the Night Bass Artists, Destructo, Wax Motif, Drezo and plenty, plenty more,” TALEENA explains. “I love all genres though, I don’t think anyone should limit themselves to one genre. Music itself is an inspiration. Simple.”

So how is the Griffith University Gold Coast champ feeling heading into the State Final?

“I am super excited and thankful. I cannot wait and I’m very keen to thrash some wubs and show everyone I am NOT your typical female DJ. #wubwub,” says TALEENA.
